trip_slide_198Lumbini is the birthplace of Siddhartha Gautam, the Shakya Prince and the ultimate Buddha was born in 623 BC. It lies in the Terai plains of Nepal, the greatest pilgrimage sites for Buddhists. The site is a large garden with a grove of pipal trees. The sacred place marked by a stone pillar erected by Emperor Ashoka of India in 249 BC is listed as one of the World Heritage Sites. Today, this holy place is known as the supreme Buddhist pilgrimage and a symbol of World Peace.  The Mayadevi temple is the main attraction for pilgrims and archaeologists alike. Other beautiful monuments and temples have been built by Vietnam, Thailand, Mongolia, France, Germany and Sri Lanka.
